Common questions

Does insurance cover ADHD testing in Boulder County?

Sometimes, and more often than people assume. Community Neuropsychology in Louisville bills a long list of plans including Medicaid and Medicare, and Amavi in Niwot lists the same two among its panels. Most of the other local assessment providers are private pay or out of network, and some of those will give you a superbill. Call your plan and use the words “neuropsychological testing.”

Can I get an ADHD evaluation on Medicaid?

Two options list Medicaid. Community Neuropsychology is credentialed with it, though you will need a referral from a treating provider and should expect roughly a three month wait. Amavi in Niwot also lists Medicaid and does its own neuropsychological testing. Confirm current status with their office when you call, because panels change.

Can a therapist diagnose ADHD?

Scope of practice varies by license and setting. What matters practically is that the systems handing out accommodations generally want a psychologist’s report, and prescribers make their own diagnostic determination before prescribing. If you need a document, go to someone who produces documents.

How long is the wait?

Published waits in Boulder County ranged from about two weeks to roughly three months when this page was last reviewed. Ask when you call, and ask separately how long after testing you get the report. Those are two different waits and the second one surprises people.

What if I think it is autism, not ADHD, or both?

Not every practice assesses autism in adults, and at least one of the ones listed here explicitly does not. Say the word autism on your first phone call rather than at intake.

Do I need a diagnosis to start therapy?

Not with me, and not with most private-pay therapists. Insurance-based therapy is different, because a billable diagnosis goes on the claim.

I already know I have ADHD. Is there any point in testing?

If you do not need the document for anything, possibly not. Some people still want it and that is a fine reason. Go in knowing what you are buying.

Is this list complete?

No. It is eight practices in and around Boulder County, three of which publish a price you can actually compare. Psychology Today’s testing and evaluation filter for Boulder County will show you more.
